Better mental health for pregnant women after disaster
M-O-M-S™ (Mentors Offering Maternal Support) on the Bayou is a Tulane University research study that aims to reduce stress and anxiety in pregnant women living in areas affected by natural disasters.
What is M-O-M-S™ on the Bayou?
The M-O-M-S™ on the Bayou study is an intervention designed to help improve health outcomes for pregnant women through a series of group classes on the emotional and relationship changes of pregnancy and motherhood, led by a “mentor” who has experienced pregnancy, labor, and motherhood.
Participants will attend six one-hour group sessions over 12 weeks with other pregnant women. These sessions focus on reducing pregnancy-specific anxiety and building coping skills through supportive relationships with local mothers. Classes are intended to begin before birthing or infant care classes and run in parallel to standard prenatal care.
